Do we need to test theology experimentally? Should science and theology be conflated? It seems the modern mindset is that every discipline has to pass scientific muster. I'm a science-believer to my bones, and I love theology. It is the study of why humans have a drive to believe in and try to interact with something beyond what they can empirically experience. Why do we make rituals, art, and sacred writings about Something beyond us? The point isn't whether that Something exists, the point is what it tells us about being human. The fact that many times this drive has led to war and oppression only reveals more about our human nature, and maybe shows us the ways we need to do better. Maybe you could categorize theology with sociology as a science, and I will concede that theology may be a handmaiden of her. But to try to prove "prayer" or the existence of divine beings is not necessary to the study of it.
