I wonder if the problem with agriculture in the Bible wasn't so much growing our own food, that is, "...providing for ourselves, rather than depending on God to provide for us", as it was with land ownership. A small village of mostly equal members collectively raising crops and keeping flocks is one thing, but large cities require vast fields and herds, all which are beyond the scope of a few individuals. This leads to one person or a few people owning the land and using those who don't to work it, in return for a portion of the produce and also protection from outside people who want to take those resources of land for themselves. It's a quick road to exploitation.
